Overview & Eligibility

  • What is Electrical Engineering?


  • EE is concerned with the design, testing, and upkeep of electrical systems, ranging from automation and communications to power generation. It covers both established fields like electronics, control systems, and power systems, as well as newer ones like EVs and renewable energy.

  • Eligibility Criteria:

    • A qualifying polytechnic entrance exam and a Class 10 grade of at least 50% are required for a diploma.

      Bachelor’s degree (B.Tech/B.E.): competitive JEE Main (and JEE Advanced for IITs) scores and ≥50% in PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics)

      A strong GATE score and a B.Tech are prerequisites for postgraduate study (M.Tech).
      PhD: usually takes three to six years after an M.Tech.

  • According to the NIRF 2024 ranking, IITs for engineering are ranked #1 in Madras, #2 in Delhi, #3 in Bombay, #4 in Kanpur, and #5 in Kharagpur.
    Amrita University, Jadavpur University, BITS Pilani, NIT Trichy, and other prestigious universities with an emphasis on EE are also included.

    Fee Schedule:

    Government Colleges: usually between ₹60,000 and ₹1.3 lakh per year, but can reach ₹5.5 lakh.
    Private Institutions: ₹60,000 to ₹13.5 lakh per year
    Another estimate places private fees between ₹4 lakh and ₹10 lakh annually, and government fees between ₹80,000 and ₹2.5 lakh.

  • Opportunities in the Industry: EE graduates can find employment in a variety of industries, including telecom, electronics, power generation, railroads, automotive, and defense. ISRO, DRDO, NTPC, BHEL, Power Grid, Indian Railways, Schneider Electric, Honeywell, and other companies are important recruiters.

    Pay Perspective:

    Experienced professionals make at least ₹8 LPA, while entry-level salaries can start at about ₹3 LPA.

    Depending on the industry and qualifications, the average yearly salary is approximately ₹3.99 lakh.
